More contraction chatter

Mike and Mike are talking about NBA contraction this morning. They are suggesting 2 teams. In the last podcast, the Professor and I took away six. I think 4 to 6 is the ideal. The product will be improved and the teams that can't compete financially will be removed. What do you think about NBA contraction?........... New podcast coming tonight!

The Cardinals need an Intervention

So I'm watching Intervention on A&E. That show disturbs me immensely. It ridiculous the lifestyles that the addicts live. If you haven't seen the show, cameras follow drug addicts around and at the end, that person's family holds an intervention in an attempt to save that person's life. I think the St. Louis Cardinals need an Intervention. I've been following the contract negotions with Albert Pujols and its just as ridiculous as this show. The Cardinals can not think about giving a 31 year old a ten year contract! The thought of it boggles the mind. I can't be the only person who finds the idea of paying a 41 year Pujols 30 million dollars as the most absurd idea ever. Albert has been a great player - a transendent player - but the Cards would be foolish to agree to this. This contract will ruin the franchise. It will be an albatross. The Cards should stand tall and let him walk away. Yes it will be a PR nightmare but the Cards are a great franchise and they will continue to be one without Pujols. Pujols's only leverage is the fact that the fans want him to be a lifetime Cardinal. Thats it. No one thinks he will still be great 10 years from now. So let get together, slap Cards management and intervene in this mess. Cardinals fan, life will go on without Big Albert. We promise.

Newton signs big deal with Under Armour

Judging from my wife's reaction every time Cam Newton took the podium in Under Armour during his lone season at Auburn, I think it was very wise that the company inked him to a shoe and apparel deal. This deal reportedly is the largest deal ever given an in-coming rookie; surpassing the deal Reggie Bush got when he entered the league. Regardless of the allegations surrounding him off the field, the kid is exciting, proved he could handle adversity and has a 1000 watt smile. UA should recoup its investment the first year. Furthermore, he took the breathe away of the scouts and NFL personnel types that attended his recent work-out so the sky is the limit for this kid. It was wise of UA to sign him especially since Auburn is an Under Armour school so we already associate him with the brand. I'm sure my wife can't wait until the commercials start rolling out.

Recovery Zone - "Super Bowl Post-Script"

"I'm giving 100%" and other stupid sports phrases....

So of course you heard about Urban Myer taking a job at ESPN. Last we heard Urban "wanted to spend more time with his family." He also cited health issues as reason he needed to take time off. Now I'm not here to call the guy a quitter or suggest he got out before he was ran out. What I'm here to rant about is the use of the phrase "spend more time with my family." We have heard this phrase over and over and the people never actually follow through. I wish once they would tell the truth and say i just can't cut it anymore. Stop blaming it on your family. Urban made 8 million dollars the past two seasons so he didn't need to take a new job. So he could have spent all the time in the world with his family. However, like every other athlete/coach, he had no intention of really staying home, it just sounds like the right thing to say. The phrase "spend more time with my family" needs to be retired.  In fact, many of the things athletes, announcers and reports say, need to be put to bed. The list includes but is not limited to -

- Basketball analysts! Stop saying "score the basketball!" What the hell else are scorers going to do with it?
- "At the end of the day." Retire it. That day has passed.
- "Leave it all on the field." Ok. If we do that, will you guys stop saying that?
- ESPN Radio! Stop saying "good stuff!" Every guest can not have possibly given you great information!
- "On Paper" Hmmm. Games are played in real life.
-"Manage the game." If the quarterback of your favorite team manages the game, your team sucks.
- "If the season ended today"....It doesn't so it doesn't matter who is currently in first place.

These are just a few sports cliches that need to be retired. What are some of the phrases you hate? What else needs to be retired?

Favre - What Should I Do?

I'm a Brett Favre fan but this clip is funny as hell!!!

Hilarious!

Who is really America's team?

Heard a interesting debate earlier today. The Cowboys go by the moniker America's Team and the question is are they really? The up-coming Super Bowl could be a match-up of the true America's Teams. The Steelers travel like a college team and they have fans everywhere. The Pack also have fans all over the country. Furthermore, historically the Steelers and Packers have won at a higher level so the argument exists. I would also add the Raiders to this list. They have a huge following as well. Tragically, that franchise is suffering from Al Davis losing his damn mind and that's a shame. So who do you think is really "America's Team?"

I told my wife that this was my poll question and of course she picked the Cow-pokes. She had a crush on Tony Dorsett as a youngster so I knew what her answer would be. She did bring up some interesting points though. She brought up that the logo is iconic and easily recognizable to the casual observer. The Cowboy's cheerleaders are on a different level than other teams. They have won multiple Super Bowls and have many all-time great players. They also have a stadium that all sports fans want to visit now. These arguments are mighty compelling. So do the Cowboys maintain their status as America's Team? Tell me what you think.

P.S. My wife wanted me to make it clear that even though she firmly believes that the Cowboys are America's team and she still loves them and their cheerleaders, she in no way wants ANY of them on her fantasy team. Her loyalty to the brand does go THAT far.

Who are you rooting for?

So I'm undecided as to who to cheer for in the Super Bowl Sunday. Watching football is much more fan when you actually care who wins. I usually root for either the underdog or the team that has never won a Lombardi trophy. Well there are no shortages of titles between these two teams and the match-up is pretty even so I'm at a loss. I don't really love any of the players or the coaching styles of either team. Don't get me wrong, I respect the talents of several of the players and I truly like Omar Epps whoops, Mike Tomlin as a coach. What's even worse, I don't even hate anyone on either team. So I guess I'm left with just watching. Who are you guys cheering for?  Someone please give me some reasons to pick a side in this game.
